Hi all, my name is Richard, and I am your new captain for this year. I am looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can over the coming year.

The weather hasn’t been kind to us of late, and the spring bounce some of us may have been hoping for with our handicaps, still feels some way away. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the ground staff for their tireless work on keeping us playing golf under challenging circumstances.

Shendish Manor is a great place to play golf. The course maybe short but it is always a challenge and some new features have been brought in this year. The new white tee box on 6 makes a big difference to that hole and really is a reason to play some of the competitions this year so that you can experience it for yourself. When I first played it, I thought that it took the trouble on the left out of play, but I stand corrected after my second outing! There is also a new bunker on the ninth which is now in play and is also my captain’s bunker. Please ask behind the bar on how to make your donation if you fall victim to it. This year, all proceeds will be going to the British Heart Foundation.

Another fundraiser for the BHF this year will be my captain’s day which is on the 1st July. It will be a singles stableford competition with the usual nearest the pins and longest drives as well as blind pairs for some added opportunities to win a prize. There will also be plenty of opportunities to donate as you plot your way around the course.

I have been a member at Shendish since 2019 and when I joined, I thought that I probably wouldn’t play many competitions. However, I think Shendish has a unique membership who are welcoming and sociable and had I not engaged with the competitive side of being a member, I would never have discovered the many people at the club I can proudly call friends. The club puts on a wider variety of competitions, swindles and roll ups that all offer the opportunity to play with new people and share a drink with after. Everyone is welcome and they are great way to get know people, so you have a wider circle of friends to play the monthly medal and stableford competitions. I’ve included the list of opportunities to play below:

Thursday Swindle – Arrive by 8.20am, first tee 8.44am

Friday Rock and Roll Swindle – Arrive by 8.40am, first tee 9.08am

Saturday Swindle – Arrive by 8.00am, first tee 8.28am

Sunday Roll up – Turn up and put your name down on the sheet order of play is first come first served, first tee from 8.04am

Check out howdidido and clubv1 apps or the clubhouse for a full fixture list of medal and stableford competitions throughout the year. A personal highlight for me in the calendar is the Shendish Ryder Cup where Winter versus summer battle it out over two days in September to determine which 6 months of the year produces the best golfers.

We also play in two leagues which offer competitive golf against other clubs, so if you fancy playing other local courses please get in touch.

It just leaves me to say that I hope you all enjoy your golf over the next year and look forward to seeing you out on the course.
